Is ISO 50001 certification mandatory in Türkiye?

It is mandatory for companies and buildings that are obliged to appoint an energy manager or set up an energy management unit (for example industrial enterprises consuming 1,000 TOE or more per year). They must have the system certified by a TÜRKAK-accredited body. For other organisations it is voluntary. ISO 50001 Consulting page →

How long is an ISO 50001 certificate valid?

Three years. A surveillance audit is carried out every year and the certificate is renewed by a recertification audit at the end of the third year. ISO 50001 Consulting page →

Does ISO 50001 certification remove the energy audit obligation?

No. Under the current regulation ISO 50001 does not exempt you from the audit obligation. Industrial enterprises of 1,000 TOE or more must have an audit every four years; commercial, service and public buildings above the thresholds every seven years. ISO 50001 Consulting page →

What is the difference between ISO 50001 and ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is an environmental management system covering all environmental impacts. ISO 50001 focuses only on energy and requires the organisation to prove measurable improvement in energy performance. Both use the same structure and can be implemented together. ISO 50001 Consulting page →

Who issues ISO certificates?

ISO does not issue certificates. Independent certification bodies accredited for the relevant standard issue them after an audit. In Türkiye accreditation is granted by TÜRKAK. What Is ISO? page →

How long is an ISO certificate valid?

Management system certificates are generally valid for 3 years, with a surveillance audit every year. What Is ISO? page →

How can you spot a fake ISO certificate?

Check on TÜRKAK or IAF CertSearch whether the issuing body is accredited for that scope, and verify the certificate number on the certification body's lookup page. Offers that promise a “certificate” within days without an audit are not reliable. What Is ISO? page →

Can a consulting firm issue an ISO certificate?

No. The consultant sets up the system and prepares you for the audit; under impartiality rules certification is done by a separate, accredited body. What Is ISO? page →

How often must an energy audit be carried out?

Every four years for industrial enterprises consuming 1,000 TOE or more per year; every seven years for commercial, service and public buildings above the thresholds. Energy Audit page →

Who can carry out an energy audit?

Energy efficiency consulting (EVD) companies authorised by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. If the organisation employs someone with the relevant audit-project certificate who has been insured for at least three months, it can carry out the audit itself. Energy Audit page →

When is the audit report sent to the Ministry?

The final audit report is submitted by the end of March of the year following the year in which the audit was carried out. Energy Audit page →

Should a company that is not obliged still have an audit?

For any business with high energy bills, an audit is the fastest way to see which investment will pay for itself in how many years, and it is the basis for support applications such as VAP. Energy Audit page →

What is a TOE and how do I calculate my consumption?

TOE (tonne of oil equivalent) is used to add different types of energy together in a common unit. Electricity, natural gas, coal and liquid fuel consumption are converted to TOE with the conversion factors published by the Ministry and summed. We do this calculation free of charge from your bills. Energy Manager Services page →

Can an industrial enterprise outsource its energy manager?

Under the regulation, in industrial enterprises the energy manager is appointed from among the company's own employees and works only at that enterprise. Outsourcing is provided for commercial, service and public buildings. Energy Manager Services page →

How do you obtain an energy manager certificate?

By attending energy manager training run by a university, professional chamber or company authorised by the Ministry and passing the Ministry's examination. Energy Manager Services page →

What percentage does VAP support cover?

Under the regulation, up to 30% of the project cost. The cap was set at TRY 15 million by the 2024 amendment and is increased every year by the revaluation rate. VAP Consulting page →

Do I need ISO 50001 or an energy manager for VAP?

Application requirements are set each year by the published procedures. Previous calls required registration in the Ministry database, an energy manager and ISO 50001; we check the current call with you before applying. VAP Consulting page →

When is the support paid?

After the project has been implemented and its results verified. No interest can be claimed if payment is delayed. VAP Consulting page →

How long is an Energy Performance Certificate valid?

Ten years from its date of issue. If a renovation changes the building's energy demand, the certificate must be renewed within one year. Energy Performance Certificate (EKB) page →

How is the EKB class determined?

By comparing the annual primary energy consumption calculated with the BEP-TR software against a reference building of the same type in the same climate zone, on a scale from A to G. Energy Performance Certificate (EKB) page →

Do I need an EKB to sell a home?

Yes; an Energy Performance Certificate is required for the sale and rental of existing buildings. Scope and exemptions are set out in the Regulation on Energy Performance of Buildings. Energy Performance Certificate (EKB) page →

Who does Law No. 5627 cover?

It covers industrial enterprises, buildings, power plants, transmission and distribution networks and transport across the generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy. Specific obligations arise according to the thresholds in the regulation. Regulations & Certificates page →

When is the energy consumption report submitted?

Organisations obliged to appoint an energy manager or set up an energy management unit submit their energy consumption data to the Ministry every year by the end of March. Regulations & Certificates page →

Do all meters have to be replaced for an energy monitoring system?

Usually not. Existing meters with communication outputs are connected to the system; new measuring devices are added only at points that need measuring but have no meter. Energy Monitoring & Analytics page →

Is an energy monitoring system mandatory for ISO 50001?

The standard does not require any particular software, but it does require significant energy uses and EnPIs to be monitored and measured at planned intervals. Automatic monitoring meets this requirement most reliably and with the least effort. Energy Monitoring & Analytics page →

How is a carbon footprint calculated?

Fuel, electricity and other activity data are multiplied by the relevant emission factors and expressed in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol are used for corporate inventories; for products, the relevant product standards or the CBAM methodology. Sustainability & Carbon Footprint page →

Who is affected by CBAM?

It directly affects producers exporting iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen products to the EU, and indirectly the suppliers providing them with raw materials and intermediate products. Sustainability & Carbon Footprint page →
